  • The music department of the Austrian National Library has around 169 pages with 45 handwritten fugues in the musical manuscripts of A.Berg under the signatures "F 21 Berg 33" (119 pages) and "F 21 Berg 34" (55.S)
  • These fugues were probably created as counterpoint exercises during A.Bergs Years of studies.
  • These fugues are recognizable conceived in the traditional singing parts. But there is no text.
  • The fugues are usually preceded by short "Canon" of the fugue subject even if this combination-sketch is not composed as a complete composition.
  • In some cases there are also combinations with a countertheme that are placed in front of the fugue.
  • The Fugues are incompletely numbered by Berg himself.
  • One can distinguish groups of 2-part, 3 part and 4-part fugues
  • Among the fugues in 4 voices there are also some with a countertoheme.
  • The order of the sheets in the estate had to be corrected in some places in order to combine the correct joint exposures with the associated continuations. The assignment of the respective joints to the source situation is documented here.
